Formerly known as Children in Dance, Alberta Dance Theatre has been a part of the Calgary dance community since 1979.

Alberta Dance Theatre's roots are in the contemporary, creative dance experience but explores storytelling through movement in all genres of dance. The annual rehearsal process and production also features acting and theatre training.

In 2017 the company returned to it's original mandate of pairing the youth artists with professional choreographers for 10-12 weeks of mentorship and collaborative creation. The result is an annual production created by children, with children, for children.

As many as 40 young performers in Grades 1-12 create and perform in ADT's annual dance production. Children's literature provides the basis for the productions and original music is commissioned. A rich tradition has been established that provides imaginative, engaging and affordable family entertainment to Calgarians.

Works of the company have also been performed around the world in Brazil and The Netherlands, and province-wide in Edmonton, Banff and Lethbridge.
